Paris on a Budget

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

Last November, during Thanksgiving Break, I was lucky enough to spend some time in Paris. I had wanted to travel there for a long time, so when Kayak's Explore feature showed me that flights to France's capital in November of 2016 would be affordable, my expression was something like this...

When planning the trip, I made extensive use of Lonely Planet's guides, along with National Geographic's. I searched for specific types of spots on Pinterest and followed many Paris-based Instagram accounts to track down interesting cafes and attractions to visit.

I thoroughly fell in love with every inch of Paris that I saw. Here are some recommendations for additions to your itinerary if you are in search of great food, great sights, and a great price.

Great Food

The French--and Parisians--embrace the art and elegance of enjoying a meal that isn't rushed. Les Ombres is one of the best places to take part in this full experience, with panoramic views of the city and the Eiffel Tower.

What would a trip to Paris be without a boulangerie visit? Du Pain et des Idées is the quintessential Parisian bakery. Upon entering the shop, you are engulfed in the warmth and smell of fresh croissants, pain au chocolat, and sweet escargots (spiral-shaped pastries with fillings ranging from raspberry to pistachio).

La Mangerie is a tapas restaurant that is approximately an eight minute walk from Pont Marie. To find this restaurant that is a blend of speakeasy, cocktail bar, and cozy eatery, you have to wind your way through side streets, but you will be rewarded generously for your efforts. The staff is charming and affable, the food is delicious and varied, and the almond cake is truly incredible.

Great Sights

The incredible engineering feat that is the Eiffel Tower is at the top of my list. If you can, try to see the Eiffel Tower at night when it is illuminated. Each hour, on the hour, the lights twinkle for five minutes. If you want to learn more about the history of lighting Le Tour Eiffel, check out this site: The Eiffel Tower's Illuminations.

Rue Crémieux is a short walk from Paris' Gare de Lyon metro station. Stroll down the street, enjoy the surprising murals, and make sure to get a photo for Instagram.

Bridges have always fascinated me. There is something intriguing about those which are aesthetically pleasing, as they strike a balance between functional and decorative. Pont Alexandre III is one such bridge that marries functionality with design beautifully.

Great Price

Centrally located between Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport and the Seine, Hostelling International's Paris Yves Robert Hostel served as the perfect home base. Breakfast is included, and a 2-person private room during off-season in November is around $77. If you are willing to spend the night in dorm-style lodging, costs come in even lower at around $30/night.

While in Paris, include some typical spots, like Notre Dame and Le Louvre, but throw in some places off the beaten path, if you so desire. I hope that you enjoy these spots and discover some of your own. Bon voyage!
