While in San Diego over the weekend, I decided to double up and take two SoulCycle classes at the La Jolla studio. Normally running an indoor cycling class, the San Diego team has moved the bikes outside under a tent and into the gorgeous California sun, but this didn't change the fact that I left feeling inspired with a new mindset to apply off the bike.
1. You don't control the beat. You control how you adjust to it.
The pandemic and resulting shutdown has shown all of us just how much is not within our control. When the music of our life plays, we can't change when the beat drops or the song slows or another vocalist joins in, but we can adjust what we do and how we move to match the new rhythm.
2. Just make the next step.
You don't have to know the tenth step from now. You just have to know the next one and either literally, or figuratively, put one foot in front of the other.
3. If something is hard, you can whine about it...or you can tackle the problem.
In Hillary H's class, she encouraged all of the students to push ourselves as hard as we could during the class. We could either whine and give up, leaving class feeling like we could have done more, or we could give the ride everything we had and leave feeling satisfied.
