Napa Valley

Updated: Feb 29, 2020

There are numerous guidebooks, blog posts, and videos dedicated to providing recommendations on where to go in California's Napa Valley, a region known for its gorgeous vineyards. After wading through the many recommendations of where to wine and dine, I selected the following spots...and I was not disappointed.

Sterling Vineyards

Founded in 1964, Sterling Vineyards has kept its charm alive, with each fifteen minutes punctuated by the sound of tower bells. Sterling is included in directories of vineyards with distinguishing characteristics in part because of the use of an aerial tram to transport guests from the parking lot and ticket booth up to the tasting area.

Parking can be a bit tight at Sterling Vineyards, so allow extra time to find a spot. After parking, go to the ticket booth by the aerial tram boarding area. For those uninterested in taking the tram, you can ride the shuttle from the parking lot to the tasting and tour area.

Once you've disembarked from the tram, you're free to learn about the winemaking process while sipping whites, reds, and rosés. For a more complete experience, I recommend booking the Silver Experience, one of the tastings available at Sterling, which includes a tasting of three wines on a patio overlooking the sprawling landscape. Learn more about the tasting options here.

Auberge du Soleil

The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil is reminiscent of Artisans at Lake Placid Lodge in upstate New York. The combination of the attentive service; delicious food; and, most importantly, outstanding views make for a relaxing start to the morning. The best part is that you don't have to be a guest of the resort to enjoy the restaurant.

Castello di Amorosa

A castle in the United States! This, on its own, is enough to draw flocks of visitors to Castello di Amorosa.

In order to enter the castle itself, a visitor must purchase an admission package. Short on time, we decided to explore the surrounding grounds, pictured above. However, if the sizable crowds lining up for tickets are any indication, this is one spot we'll have to add to a future Napa Valley itinerary.

Beringer Vineyards

The Rhine House at Beringer Vineyards

One of the first wineries in Napa Valley, Beringer Vineyards was founded in 1876 by German brothers Jacob and Frederick.

The German heritage of the winery shines through in the architectural style of the Rhine House, pictured above. Given the charming aesthetics of the house and grounds, it makes perfect sense that Murad and Nataly Osmann of #followmeto fame would have collaborated with Beringer. The attention to detail is a foundational element of both groups' work.

Beringer Vineyards was a dream to visit. There are no admission fees, although you can opt to pay for a guided tour, tastings, or a glass of wine. For those more inclined to explore at their own leisure, Beringer allows you to walk the grounds. The best part, though, is that you can buy a glass of wine and take it with you to enjoy in one of the many outdoor seating areas.

I hope you have a wonderful time in Napa Valley. Cheers!
